I heard this story in the movie "The pursuit of Happyness",
Once a man was drowning; a boat came by and asked him to come aboard for which he replied "god will save me.", after some time another came by and asked the man to come aboard and again he replied that god will save him.
Finally he drowned and was at the Pearly Gates.
He asked god, "Why did the god let him die and not help?" to which the god answered " I sent you two boats, why didn't you get onboard?"

God helps everyone who asks for it.
It is upto us to see his greatness and not be adamant/foolish and keep an open mind.
